Megan Howlett-Farmer for VP Education (Arts and Sciences)
Hi! my name is Megan, I'm studying LLB Law, and I am running for KCLSU Vice President of Education for the Arts and Sciences departments.
Studying law at KCL has been an eye-opening experience, where I’ve learnt how important the comfort and stability of one’s academic environment is to ensure prosperous student life. My goal is to do all in my power to maximise student satisfaction during my time in office.

I believe in the fundamental importance of the student voice in creating an inclusive environment on campus, where all students have the same opportunity to thrive. The means by which I will pursue this is by democratising, diversifying, decolonising and demarketising our student union.

I aim to represent the needs of all students. However, my ideas specifically for students studying arts and Sciences courses are:
-
Utilizing multiple feedback channels.
Including online surveys, face-to-face meetings and social media to maximise student engagement with their student officers so that students can openly discuss issues with the progress of their education. All student officers should have available office hours.
-
Improving the quality and the speed of feedback.
A more personalised and constructive framework of marking assessments, with a particular focus on content, structure and writing style.
-
Advocate for fair exam timetabling.
In response to students having consecutive core module exams one day after another, I will aim to ensure that a minimum duration of 48 hours is placed between exams, to minimise student burn-out.
I will also suggest that there are no exams timetabled during periods of religious observance.
-
Improving the quality of study spaces.
The available study spaces on campus should reflect the amount paid in tuition fees by the student body, leading to an increase in social connections made on campus and student satisfaction rates.

-
Organise a semesterly Student Leaders Conference.
Whereby Presidents of KCL Societies meet with Student Officers and address issues faced by the communities they represent and discuss ideas of potential reform.
-
In-person, informal “tea talks”.
Between student officers and student body, to encapsulate all angles of the student experience, and to identify possible steps that can be taken to make KCL a more inclusive university.

Introduce paid roles for elected representation officers.

I will advocate for the replacement of liberation networks with paid student officers representing members of the LGBT+ community, disabled students and people of colour to increase advocacy within the union for marginalised communities.
-
Increase the availability and awareness of student compensation.
In response to the UCU strikes, reflective of the duration of disrupted learning.
-
Affordable Accommodation.
Responding to the escalating cost of living crisis, I will propose an increase in the number of rooms made available under the King's Affordable Accommodation Scheme (KAAS).
